Why a wine collection needs a specialist mover

Wine is one of the few household items that can be ruined by an ordinary moving day. A standard truck isn't climate-controlled, and in Southern California the cargo area can get extremely hot by mid-afternoon. In that heat wine expands, pushes against the cork and begins to lose freshness within hours.

General movers also limit their liability. On interstate moves the default released-value protection is $0.60 per pound per item — about $1.80 for a bottle that might be worth several hundred dollars. A specialist mover inventories each bottle, insures it at declared value and keeps it at cellar temperature from pickup to delivery.

How a white-glove wine move works

1. Quote: share your bottle count, both addresses and your target date. 2. Walkthrough: for larger cellars, a short in-home or video visit confirms access and packing needs. 3. Inventory & pack: bottles are recorded and packed into molded wine shippers on site. 4. Transport: wine travels in a temperature-controlled vehicle, never sitting in a hot truck between stops. 5. Deliver & rack: wine is checked against the inventory and racked in your new cellar or placed into interim storage.

Local moves, regional moves and everything between

Most moves are local — across North County San Diego, from Rancho Santa Fe to Del Mar, or from a downsized home into professional storage. Regional moves between San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara follow the same climate-controlled process. The team is based in Southern California and also moves larger collections anywhere in the U.S. — see long-distance wine moving.

Wine Moving: common questions

Can regular movers move my wine collection?

Many standard household movers will move wine, but most don't keep it climate-controlled and limit their liability for it. A typical moving truck isn't temperature-regulated, and on interstate moves the default 'released value' protection is just $0.60 per pound per item — roughly $1.80 for a bottle that may be worth hundreds. Some carriers also decline to carry alcohol across state lines altogether. For anything beyond a few everyday bottles, a dedicated wine mover with refrigerated transport and declared-value coverage is the safer choice.

How much does it cost to move a wine collection?

The cost to move a wine collection depends mainly on bottle count, distance, and how much packing is involved, so it's quoted per job rather than at a flat rate. The biggest drivers are the number of bottles (and whether they're already in cases), access at both ends (stairs, elevators, gated estates), whether you need inventory documentation, and whether the wine goes straight to a new cellar or into interim climate-controlled storage. Request a quote with your bottle count and both addresses for an exact figure.

How should wine bottles be packed for moving?

Wine should be packed in purpose-built wine shippers — molded pulp or foam inserts that hold each bottle separately — rather than in standard boxes with newspaper. Shippers stop bottles touching each other, absorb vibration, and keep a full 12-bottle case (around 35–40 lb) manageable. Older bottles with sediment are best kept upright for a short move so the sediment stays at the bottom; for long-term storage after the move, bottles go back on their sides to keep corks moist.

Is my wine insured during the move?

Your wine should be covered for its declared value while in transit, and you should confirm that in writing before moving day. Ask how coverage is calculated (replacement value vs. purchase price), whether high-value bottles need to be itemized, and whether coverage continues while the wine is in interim storage. Also check your homeowner's or collection policy — some cover wine in transit, many don't.

How far in advance should I book a wine move?

Book a wine move two to four weeks ahead for most local moves, and earlier for large collections, long-distance moves, or the busy summer moving season. Larger cellars need time for inventory and packing before the truck arrives, and refrigerated vehicles are limited. If your date is fixed by a home sale or closing, mention it in your quote request so the schedule can be built around it.

Can wine be moved to another state?

Yes — the team is based in Southern California but moves larger wine collections to and from anywhere in the United States. Moving your own personal collection to a new home in another state is usually possible, but rules on bringing alcohol across state lines vary and some states limit quantities or require paperwork, which is why many general movers won't carry wine interstate. Share your bottle count and destination in the quote form and the requirements for your state will be checked before you book.
